Born in 1982, STAR is a 5-week summer program for youth, ages 10-18, which provides youth with the highest quality theatre training opportunities available in Alaska. Through specialized training – which culminates in fully-realized productions – students engage in valuable theatre skills as well as teamwork, discipline, and creative thinking. In 2002, STAR was recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts as one of 16 “outstanding American arts programs for young people.”

Discover New Worlds
It’s time to register for Perseverance Theatre’s Summer Theatre Arts Rendezvous! Work with local and out-of-town professional directors and designers on one of three exciting shows. Rehearsals and classes begin July 12. This five-week program is perfect for students who are excited about theatre and performance. As a theatre training program, STAR is also a great opportunity for young people with little to no experience. In addition to rehearsals, students will participate in daily workshops on voice, movement and acting technique. Students ages 10-18 will perform one of three tales: the classic musical The Wizard of Oz, a new play based on the Tlingit stories about Shamanism, or The Hobbit. STAR runs July 12 through August 15. Tuition is $400. Full scholarships for Alaska Native students are available thanks to the generous support of Sealaska Heritage Institute. Call today to sign up, or for more details, contact Shona Strauser at 364-2421 ext. 232. Space is limited, so be sure to sign up soon!
The Wizard of Oz
Based on the stories by L. Frank Baum, The Wizard of Oz follows Dorothy’s adventure after she gets swept up in a tornado and dropped in the land of Oz. In her quest to return home to Kansas, she meets new friends and acquires a new enemy in the Wicked Witch of the West.
The Hobbit
Based on the classic book, The Hobbit tells the story of Bilbo Baggins and his great voyage to reclaim stolen treasure. With the great wizard Gandalf and a band of dwarves, this tale of Bilbo’s quest through the Middle Earth will excite audiences and performers alike.
The play based on Tlingit stories:
A Hundred Thousand Drops of Rain by Ishmael Hope
Actors will perform a new play based on Tlingit stories about íxt’, or shaman. In partnership with the Perseverance Theatre director, the playwright and cultural knowledge bearers from Sealaska Heritage Institute, actors will learn about shamanism and dramatize two stories woven together in a single play.
