In the summer of 2014, Perseverance Theatre will present Summerfest – a six-week festival of three new plays – two by Alaskan writers and the most recent Tony Award-winner for Best Play. The Alaska stories include the remount of the world premiere production of The Blue Bear adapted from Southeast writer Lynn Schooler’s book of the same name, and Warriors, a world premiere by Alaskan author Dave Hunsaker about Alaska Native Warriors. The third play will be the hilarious 2013 Tony Award winner for Best Play: Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang.
To complement the festival, and working in partnership with the University of Alaska Southeast, a training institute including residencies for writers, workshops, and readings of new plays in progress will take place on the UAS campus. The institute will involve actors in the festival company, locals, and a select number of special guest artists as faculty.
Alaskans and visitors to Alaska can take in one, two, or all three of the shows that will run on a rotating schedule for six-weeks in the summer of 2014. It’s a unique opportunity to experience wonderful stories about Alaska, take a glimpse into the lives of the people and culture that make Alaska great, and take in the latest Broadway hit comedy as it makes its debut in the Last Frontier.
Tickets are available now via a FlexPass Subscription or by calling 907-364-2421. You can also add Summerfest on to your Season 2014-2015 Regular Season Order Form.
The Blue Bear Adapted by Luan Schooler and Leon Ingulsrud
From the Book by Alaskan Author Lynn Schooler
In a visually stunning production, The Blue Bear tells the story of Lynn Schooler, a wilderness guide and author from Juneau and his remarkable relationship with wildlife photographer Michio Hoshino as they search to find and photograph the rare and legendary glacier bear.
Warriors is a play about Alaska Natives in war at different times in history. Two young men in “Castner’s Cutthroats”, an elite scouting and fighting force in WWII survive off the land on Japanese-occupied Attu Island in 1943. Two young women in the volunteer U.S. Army of 2003 transport a prisoner in Baghdad. And through music, dance, masks, and storytelling other Alaska Native warriors from times past are invoked and brought to life.
