The Cyanide Ball – An inspiration for TREADWELL GOLD

In one of our favorite moments in Treadwell Gold, the character of Hanna–in her role as the Independence Day Goddess of Liberty–recites a poem, “Turning Rock into Gold.” The source of the poem, courtesy of Sheila Kelly’s book came from the dance program from the 1910 “Cyanide Ball,” a dance in celebration of the technology that made mining in Treadwell possible. Here is the illustrated version of the poem as printed in the dance program in 1910. It’s the 1910 version of an infographic. In rhyming quatrains, of course.
